About the Summer Academy

School of Journalism and Mass Communications of Aristotle University Thessaloniki (AUTh), Jean Monnet Chair for European Integration Journalism along with Deutsche Welle Akademie (DW Akademie), Center for Media and Information Literacy at Temple University USA, University of Zagreb Croatia, University of Novi-Sad Serbia, Beijing Foreign Studies University,  Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Hallym University Korea, Digital Communication Network Southeast Europe Hub and Proof organisation, organise the 4th Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy: New Trends in Media and Journalism: "Global Media models and emerging technology trends - AI, VR, Verification" - in Thessaloniki, Greece between 24th - 27th of August 2020 (online – due to COVID19 circumstances). Also, the organizing committee for the THISAM 2020, will initiate a colloquium/one day international conference on 28th of August 2020 (online).


In today’s world, accurate information is an increasingly critical resource for our understanding of the world. Building on the success of the 2018 Summer Academy School, we are looking forward to welcoming another cohort of student participants from all over the world to Thessaloniki International Media Summer Academy.

This year emphasis will be in Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, disinformation, verification and Mobile Journalism. The intensive multi-disciplinary training course aims to provide in-depth knowledge and robust skills on important topics and evolutions in media and communication. Participants in this course will emerge with a better understanding of the latest academic research, policy, market and professional trends in the focused area, as well as develop a network of colleagues to share their experiences, ideas and points of views. 
The International Media Summer Academy will address and focus on issues that are timely and critically important:

  • Artificial Intelligence Media and Journalism
  • Virtual Reality
  • New Trends in Media
  • Fighting disinformation
  • Mobile Journalism
  • Media Literacy

 Summer Academy intends to be a major forum where current issues and research developments will be presented. For this purpose, eminent international scholars will be invited to share their expertise in the form of lectures, collaborative study designs, digital content development, and new models. During the Summer Academy, student participants will contribute in workshops developing case studies, extending their methodological knowledge through hands on-practices.

It is a unique opportunity to benefit from the Organizers outstanding research into journalism/communication combined with the expertise of pioneering media professionals. The program is structured around keynote presentations by distinguished experts, interactive small group work, and roundtable discussions. Courses run with a mix-method teaching style and includes lectures, discussion, small group work, policy lab and hands-on practicum. Sessions will be led by experts from across communication fields, including research, policy making, and media industries.
